Hi In my own research into the family of my g-g-grandfather, Patrick Gilmore, born Ballygar, c1834, I have recently discovered that my Patrick, and Patrick Sarsfield Gilmore may have been cousins. Patrick Gilmore (b1835), left Ballygar around 1847 and ended up in Alston, in Cumberland, England. He became a mineralogist, being very well-known and respected in this field, all around the world. I have found several references to him in historical writings and references in this field. He supplied mineral collectors in America, amongst other places, and travelled around the world. On at least one occasion, around 1881, he stayed with Patrick Sarsfield Gilmore during a visit. This would suggest that they may, indeed, have been related. Patrick Gilmore's father was a Peter Gilmore, and I believe, but have no firm evidence yet, that Peter's brother Patrick was Patrick Sarsfield's father, making the two younger Patricks first cousins. An amazing coincidence - Patrick Gilmore traded in his business with his own son, Peter. Peter was an alcoholic, and died on 19th September 1892, aged just 36, from alcohol related complications. Two days later (21st September 1892), at his funeral, Patrick collapsed, and then died three hours afterwards. Three days after that, on 24th September 1892, Patrick Sarsfield Gilmore also collapsed and died, albeit a continent away. It makes me shiver to think of it. I don't have much documentary evidence of the family link (if there really is one), but if you are interested in any other information I might have, please don't hesitate to contact me.
