Early Va. Gilmores - Matthew
I have recently found out more about my Gilmore line. I had been at a halt for so long on this line and found some clues in the book, Hampshire and Hardy Counties, (W) Va Abstracts, by Larry Shuck. I am related to a David Gilmore b. 1797 Va. who moved to Tucker co. Va now WVa about 1820 and settled there with wife Elizabeth daughter of John Neville and great granddaughter of Gen. Joseph Neville of Hardy co.Va. I had long suspected that David was a descendant of a Matthew Gilmore who had land at South Branch Manor in Hardy co. in the latter part of the 1700's. I could not find which Gilmore family these were from. Here are some excerpts that I have found on this family:
Nov. 13, 1774 Matthew Gilmour to Isaac Gibbs of Cecil co. Md. and Mark Cahoon of Kent Co. Del. lot N.81 degrees of 226 acres in the South Branch Manor for 278.04 pounds adj. to Kerr and Richardson. Land was leased by said Matthew and his sons Robert Gilmour and Moses Gilmour and stepson John Singleton. (pg 54 of said book)
Other references in the book to land transactions referred to Matthew and his sons Robert and Moses. (pg. 68) Apparently, a Michael Carr owned land adjacent to this family. (pg. 73 of said book)
Also, Matthew Gilmore died1787 as in " Matthew Gilmore, examined Feb. 14, 1787 by Felix Seymour, Job Welton. (Hampshire co. (w)Va. Will book Vol. 21780-1794 (pg. 20 of said book)
Finally, May 11, 1789 Robert Gilmour heir of Matthew Gilmour and widow and relicht Sarah Gilmour all of Hardy co. to Adrian Valick of Baltimore Md. 229 acres for 278.04pounds lot N 81 degrees, land leased by Lord Fairfax to said Matthew and sons Robert and Moses and to John Singleton stepson. .........
Okay, so we have a Matthew Gilmore b. abt. 1740 possibly earlier?(he died 1787), sons Robert and Moses b. abt. 1760?. This seems to fit the timeframe. I am guessing that either Robert or Moses may turn out to be the father of the Gilmores that I have been searching for, including my David, Matthew (Mathias) b. 1785 who married Elizabeth Shobe,Sarah Gilmore married a Hiram Hutton, Nancy Gilmore married a Jacob Shobe, Ruth Gilmore married a Jacob House, and Mary Gilmore married a Michael Carr. These were all marriages from Hardy co. Va. Plus I believe all of these people had ties to the South Branch Manor in the Hardy co. Va. area.
Does anyone know of a Gilmore line with a Matthew and sons Robert and Moses?? Are they related to John and Agnes Gilmore of the Kerr's creek massacre? The name Kerr was mentioned in land transactions with these Gilmores. Thanks for your help.
