The Gillispies of Scott County
compiled by
Marguerite Atteberry Emmons
In 1893 a covered wagon train of settlers arrived in northern Scott County from Powersville, Bracken County, KY and camped on the old Wood Farm near Stonewall and Dixie Highway. Among this intrepid group of pioneers were several members of the Gillispie family. All descendants of Lewellen Valentine Gillispie of Bracken County, KY, they settled permanently in the area, putting down deep and abiding roots in this rural community which exist to this day. What follows is a family chart based on personal research and on the information provided by Mrs. Nellie Wood and her daughter Rachel Southworth, a descendant of two of the Gillispie children.Further information is from KY Vital Statistics, Gone, Forgotten, Now Remembered (an Index of Scott County Cemeteries), and Bracken and Scott County records. Mrs. Wood also had access to a family Bible which offered some information and a 1900 Scott County census. Some information from subsequent descendants and other researchers as noted.
1LEWELLEN VALENTINE GILLISPIE, b 8 Jun 1826 [Nellie Wood, Bible] Bracken County, KY or Albemarle County, VA [Karen Scales] Ms. Scales has sent me a copy of a will that shows that Lewellen is the son of William Abner Gillespie and his second wife Martha “Patsy” Hundley, whose father Nehamiah Hundley was a Revolutionary War patriot.William and Patsy were married 5 Aug 1822 Albemarle County, VA and moved to Bracken County, KY.Patsy's will mentions her son L.V.See Gillispie Family Documents for text.
Lewellen’s first name is variously spelled in documents.I have selected the spelling on his marriage record in Bracken County.Gillispie is also spelled many ways; for ease of understanding, I have standardized it as it is currently spelled by most family members who live in Scott County. It is unknown at this time if Lewellen made the journey to Scott County, or when or where he died.If he did make the journey, he probably had died by 1900 as there is no further record of him.
William Abner Gillispie, his father, was believed to have been married twice, and the exact birth order of all of his children is unknown. He may have had three sons by his first wife, and eleven or twelve children by his second wife.Until birth order is established, LV will carry the number 1 in this document.See also William Abner Gillispie Family.
m1 28 Aug 1843 Bracken County, KY [NOTE: Marriage record reads Gallasby and date is 22 Aug which is probably the date for the bond or a misreading of the actual date.]Mary Isabelle Frances Jane Rice (b 21 May 1828 Bracken County, KY, d either 7 Aug 1864 Bracken County, KY or by Oct 1864 Bracken County, KY.This confusion stems from the same death date for both Mary Rice Gillispie and her daughter Mary Gillispie in Nellie Wood’s notes.)Mary was probably the daughter of Michael Rice and Leticia Hamm of Bracken County, KY. [FHC IGI].See Rice Line of Descent for more.
m2 11 Oct 1864 [Bible]Sarah Worthington
Children of Lewellen Valentine Gillispie1 and Mary Isabelle Frances Jane Rice: [NOTE: Bracken County, KY is assumed for all dates prior to the 1893 migration.Birth dates of children based on Bible record.]
**11JOHN B. GILLISPIE, b 2 Feb 1845 Bracken County, KY, d 11 Feb 1913 Scott County, KY [NOTE: Death record filed as John T. Gillispie--KYVS] Descendant Judy Gillispie Bales says his nickname was "Tish."The confusion in John's middle initial led first to a confusion about his death as there was a John T. Gillispie, resident of Scott County, who committed suicide and is buried in the Gillispie Graveyard.See Stray Gillispie Data.John T. remains unidentified.
m21 Feb 1869 Bracken County, KYElizabeth Neal(e)(d 1908 Scott County, KY) [Scott News article]Elizabeth was said to be blind, or nearly so by the time of her death. The death notice in the Georgetown paper says she was almost 60, but neither that, nor the Bible offer any additional information about her.I have not found any Neal(e) families in Bracken County census or records, so believe she may have been from another county, possibly Mason or Pendleton County.
12NICHOLAS D. C. GILLISPIE, b 23 Feb 1847 Bracken County, KY[NOTE: Nellie Wood mentions only the names of his children and their spouses; what dates there are I found in GFNR or other Scott County records.]
mMARY ISABELLE GILLESPIE(b 4 Dec 1852 Pendleton County, KY)She was his first cousin and daughter of LV's brother James Ira Gillispie and Susan Downard.

To Sam O’Nan Wood, Calvin was “Great Uncle Calvin” and the story is told how Calvin, while still a child, fell down the well at the “Homeplace” (in Bracken County) and that his mother tucked her skirt up and climbed down the rock walls to rescue him.Years later, a drunk Calvin was riding a horse through Sadieville when a passing train spooked the horse, and both fell into the big open well that was near where the Pavillion now stands. Both were rescued, but the horse died.Calvin died some years later from a heart attack while running to catch the train at High Bridge to come home.Sam attended Calvin’s funeral at the “Bates” house (then Calvin’s home) on Hinton Road. The yard was filled with many "horse and buggy" sets and the hearse was pulled by several teams of grey horses.Sam, who was then six, enlivened the funeral by ringing the dinner bell during the service. The bell is still there.~Rachel Southworth 29 Jun 1998
Treva Rice also shares the following on Calvin, who was a great-grandfather to her husband. On his excursion to High Bridge, KY on the Southern Railroad, he was accompanied by his son Chester. He was brought home in a basket on the train, after his death.Treva also mentions Calvin's drinking and the well incident.

m6 Oct 1875 Maysville, Mason County, KYAdam Boston “Boss” Crupper (b 30 Jan 1858, d 4 May 1914.Buried in the Gillispie Cemetery, Hinton Road, Scott County, KY.According to Rachel Southworth, her grandmother Lillie M. Wood (178) or “Moma Lil” called this couple “Uncle Boss” and “Aunt Babe”.I had also heard him referred to as “Boss” by other family members. It took some digging to discover his given name.A family profile on p 168 of Families and History: Scott County, Kentucky tells how in 1875 Capt. R. P. Crupper traveled from Virginia to Oklahoma to resettle his family.Along the way they stopped in Maysville, Mason County, KY where his son Adam “Boss” Crupper met and married Lutishie or Lutisha. They remained in Maysville and later bought a house and lot near Hinton, KY.The profile goes on to give information about the couple’s descendants. It mentions they’d had twelve children, nine of whom survived; Nellie Wood identifies only the nine.Birth order is unknown.~Article by Jo Ann Lyons.
