Hi again, It seams the family went from New Brunswick, then to Maine USA, then back to New Brunswick, and then on to Ontario. Here is Eleanor/Ellen in 1881 (she is married, but William Meagher not at home. He was probably working on the boats as he also was a Ship's Carpenter. William died in 1883). Her daughter Ella, Ida and widowed Josephine (Meagher) Fairburn are living with her. Notice that Josephine says she was born in the US -- which she also gives as her birth location when she married John Thomas Fairburn in 1874: Ellen MEAGHER M Female Scottish 36 New Brunswick C. Methodist ------------------------------------------------------- Source Information: Census Place Thorold, Welland, Ontario Division 1 Page Number 32 Ontario, Canada Marriages, 1857-1924 Name: Margaret Lititia Josephine Meagher Birth Place: United States Res: Grantham Twp Age: 19 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1855 Father Name: William Meagher Mother Name: Ellen Miller Spouse Name: John Thomas Fairburn Spouse's Age: 29 Spouse Estimated Birth Year: abt 1845 Spouse Birth Place: England Res: Grantham Twp Spouse Father Name: Thomas Fairbairn Spouse Mother Name: Barbara Storer Marriage Date: 19 Sep 1874 Marriage Place: Welland Marriage County: Welland Witnesses: William Wilson, Duncan Davidson So, I think that 1851 census is correct, especially when you compare it to the 1860 census of Maine (see below): 1851 Census, Moncton, Westmoreland Co., NB, p. 42 Ginlass(sic), Roderick, (H = Head) age 32, Scotch, Ships Carpenter, Date of Entering Colony: July 1849 Ellen, age 28 (W= Wife) (in Colony since birth) John F., age 5 months (S=Son) ( " ) Scott, Julia, 6, Servant (L=Lodger) ( " ) Re: 1860 census Again, William is not at home, but Eleanor is listed with all her children. Note that all of the children are listed as Gillis, even though Julia had surname SCOTT in 1851, and Josephine gave her parents as William & Ellen (Miller) MEAGHER in her 1874 marriage. Also, again it is verified that Georgina/Georgianna Gillis was born after John, not before: 1860 United States Federal Census Home in 1860: Robbinston, Washington, Maine Eleanor Meagher, 34, b. NB, seamstress, 100/personal Julia Gillis, 15, b. NB (*a SCOTT) John Gillis, 9, b. NB Georgianna Gillis, 7, b. Maine Josephine Gillis, 4, b. Maine (*a MEAGHER) According to the 1860 census, Georgianna was born in Maine (although in 1881 census, it has that she was born in Ontario???). Her birth location would need further censuses to verify which birth location was correct. However, this does present the possibility that Roderick Gillis died in Maine ca 1853-54, not in NB -- and that Eleanor re-married to William Meagher in Maine. Something to think about ....
