Hi Cal, Re: Gillis (Gillies/Gillass/Gillice/Gilyss/etc...) The ending that looks like a 'p' is the way they used to write a double 's'. The further you go back in records, the more you see that. Also, census enumerators were not exactly known for perfect spelling! Speaking of censuses, here is Georgina (Gillis) Davidson in the 1881 census (notice the mispelling of Davidson -- also an 'n' added in where it is not suppose to be!). Also notice that Georgina was born ca 1853-1854 -- i.e. born after John F. Gillis, not before, which ties in with the 1851 census.
