Hi Cal,

Your Roderick Gillis and Eleanor Miller may have married later than 1845 -- and somewhere in 1849-1850 range. According to the 1851 census, Roderick arrived in New Brunswick in July 1849 (and Ellen was there since birth). They appear to have only one child by census time -- your ancestor John F. Gillis, then aged 5 months. They also had a girl, Julia Scott, age 6, living with them. This Julia does not appear to be the daughter of Roderick, but may be the daughter of Ellen through a first marriage??? (i.e. Eleanor Miller may have already been a widow when she married Roderick Gillis???). This may be important when searching for their marriage record as Eleanor could perhaps be under Miller or Scott).

1851 Census, Moncton, Westmoreland Co., NB, p. 42
Ginlass(sic), Roderick, (H = Head) age 32, Scotch, Ships Carpenter, Date of Entering Colony: July 1849
Ellen, age 28, (W= Wife) (in Colony since birth)
John F., age 5 months (S=Son) ( " )
Scott, Julia, 6, Servant (L=Lodger) ( " )

Another Gillis in Moncton, Westmoreland County that may have some relationship to Roderick (same year for entering Colony):

1851 Census, Moncton, Westmoreland Co., NB, p. 33 (Boarding House)
Gillass, James, age 30, (L=Lodger), Sawyer, Date of Entering Colony: 1849

*you had emailed me privately, but did not provide birth location of John F. Gillis for the family's whereabouts in 1851, so could not locate family on 1851 census. When I saw this post, re-checked census.....
