I believe William served in Companies D & K of the 1st Kansas Inf. and Company H of the 16th Kansas Cav. He received a pension Appl: 179,917 Cert 308,571. His widow did as well Appl 913,195 Cert 717,170.
You can get a copy of his pension from the National Archives in Washington, DC for $75. While a bit pricey and the genealogical data it contains is uncertain, it may have some of what you are looking for. As I understand all the pensions will eventually be online, but I don't know the timeline. Some are already available online at Footnote.com for a fee.
His obituary may prove helpful even if it only lists surviving siblings.
There were several Gilliland's in the 1830 census of Huntingdon County. Check with the Huntingdon County Historical Society to see if they can help you. While a long shot his death may have been reported back in his home county.
