A number of Gillilands settled in DeKalb Co., AL (northeast Alabama) in the early to mid-1800s. It is possible that these Gillilands are related to the family of the John Gilliland (and Elizabeth Young) who lived in east Tennessee after the Revolutionary War. At least two of John's sons lived in Alabama for a while (Abel and Harvey) but their families left ALabama, apparently to go to Texas with other family members (son Elijah and his family for one). I am looking for a definitive genealogy of this John Gilliland that I can compare with lists of Gillilands in DeKalb Co. from the mid- to late-1800s. There is at least one or two generations between what I currently have on John Gilliland's family and the DeKalb Co. Gillilands. I am trying to determine if these Gillilands are related. If anyone can give me a web address for a site that has this John Gilliland's history, I would appreciate it. Or if someone has a good history of the DeKalb Co. Gillilands, I would like to obtain a copy of that or its source(s). John Gilliland was born in the early 1700s. I have seen both 1725 and 1745 as his birth year. He died in 1798 in Cocke Co., TN. As far as I know, he is not related to the John Gilliland who came to north Alabama from South Carolina in the early 1800s and married Sarah Brashier in 1819, and is not related to the John Gilliland (1792 - 1835) who settled in northeast Alabama around Gadsden and married Rebecca MyBrayer. It is possible that the DeKalb Co. Gillilands are related to one of these other John Gillilands, but again, I don't have anything to tie them together. Thanks for any help anyone can provide.
