I, too, am seeking information on this John Gillies. Here is what I have. He appears to be the editor of "The Memiors of Rev. George Whitefield" as well as "The Sermons of John Maclaurin." These are available in many state university libraries in 19th century editions.

Richard Sher mentions him briefly in his book "Church and University in the Scottish Enlightenment." Mention is also made of him in Ned Landsman's article "Presbyterians and Providential Society: The Evangelical Enlightenment in the West of Scotland, 1740-1775." Eighteenth Century Life 15(Feb and May 1991): 194-209.

I am trying to discover the relationship, if any, between this John Gillies (1712-96) and another John Gillies (1747-1836) who was a scholar of classical Greek thought. Father-son perhaps?
