Hi Ann King:
I'm really pleased to hear from you.
The reason Jane Soper used the phrase "until she (Miriam Gilley) hears from her brother (William Gilley)", is because William Gilley emigrated to Toronto, Ontario, Canada soon after the 1851 English Census was taken.William Gilley (a cordwainer/shoemaker like his father Edward GILLEY) is my great-great-grandfather.The fisherman William Gilley you found in the 1861 English Census in Tormoham, is probably a cousin--there seem to be a lot of GILLEYs in the area.
About 1853, William GILLEY married Amelia HAWKE in Toronto, Ontario. They had six children, the third one being Frances Myriam Hawke GILLEY (my great-grandmother), born Aug. 8, 1858 in Toronto, Ontario.I figure Frances' middle name came from her father's sister Miriam.
On Aug. 6, 1878, Frances Myriam Hawke GILLEY married Thomas NOBLE in Toronto, Ontario. They had 9 children. The fourth, Myriam Gilley NOBLE (my grandmother) was born Mar. 10, 1885 in Toronto, Ontario. On June 8, 1910, Myriam married Stephen Thomas FERRIS in Toronto, Ontario.
Last month I finally discovered my great-great grandfather William GILLEY died Jan. 1, 1904 in Wabash, Indiana, U.S.A.He emigrated there in 1898 to live with his daughter Amelia Hawke GILLEY (born Nov. 17, 1856 in Toronto, Ontario) and her second husband George Samuel COURTIER.
I have researched extensively on William GILLEY's descendants and would love to trade information with you.
