I'm moving this discussion, that started on the Redding forum, to the Gilliam forum because that's the surname we're dealing with now in the later strands of the thread, and the information William Eisele provided may be of interest to other Gilliam researcher. His last note, about Abigail Gilliam/Gillum, is post #1244 on the Redding genforum. It reads as follows: Barry--Abigail was born between 1760 to 1765 (She is listed as between 70 and 80 in the 1840 Indiana census). She married William Jackson in about 1782. Their first child was born in August of 1783. Their children were: 1. Benjamin-Born 1783. 2. Grace- Born 1785 3. Sarah- Born 1786. 4. Thomas- Born 1788. 5. William- Born 1790. 6. Abigail- Born 1792. 7. Joseph- Born 1794. 8. Daniel- Born 1796. 9. Isaiah- Born 1798 (my ancestor). I believe that all of these children ended up in Indiana in Rush County close to where your ancestors went to in Wayne County. A matter of fact, William and Abigail were in Wayne County first before they came to Rush County. I have a deed that lists William Jackson as being of Wayne County, Indiana when he purchased his first land in Rush County. I believe that the 1st 4 children could be named after William and Abigail's parents. No proof but something to check out. Bill * * * * * Bill -- I know nothing about the Jackson side, but from my papers, mainly based on the Rev. War pension application of William Gillum/Gilliam, his children were, in order, John (b. 1781), William, Lucy, Thomas, Salley, Richard and Elizabeth. Offhand I can't think of any Benjamins or Graces among the Gilliams, or for that matter the Bagbys, though there were no doubt some. Assuming, as I have, that the first wife of William Bagby of Halifax & Wilkes Counties was a sister of William Gilliam, I don't find too many coincidental given names from among their children, as compared with your list for Abigail's children. Greg Gilliam has helped me out quite a bit with this line. We tend to surmise that the Rev. soldier William Gilliam of Halifax & Wilkes Counties, whose will was proved in 1831, is perhaps either (a) the William Gilliam who was chr in 1735 in New Kent County, son of Richard and Rebecca Gilliam, and/or (b) the William Gilliam who chose William Sale of Caroline Co., Va. as his guardian 13 Nov 1755, and/or (c) the William Guilliam (sic) who sued Elias Blackburn in 1757/8 in Caroline County, OR (d) the son of said the William Gilliam. Elias Blackburn was William Sale's stepfather. William Sale (my 5th great grandfather) is closely associated with William Gilliam and the Bagbys in Halifax & Wilkes Counties. I should think that the William Gillium who died in Wilkes County in 1831 is a William Jr. (because otherwise we'd be talking about someone who did not start a family until he was 46 years old, and who lived to be almost 96 -- possible but not normal for the times), except that the dates are a little tight... mainly the problem that William Gilliam's age as of the 1800 census is given as over 45 years. Close analysis of the Halifax Co. tax lists suggests that there MAY have been two William Gilliams there, father and son, just briefly. In 1784, William Gillum is listed as having 25 acres at the head of Watery Branch. In 1784 and 1785, he has 30 acres, on "Wonr." Branch. In 1786, a Will. Gillom, with two free polls has 30 acres, but unless there was just a transcription error, the list ALSO shows a William Gilliam with 30 acres, and one poll. In 1787, only one William Gilliam shows up, this time with 58 acres and one poll; ditto in 1788 and 1790. I will need to unearth my notes from the Halifax deeds, but there is just the chance that the change from two 30 acre tracts in 1786 to one 58 acre tract represents an inheritance. I looked for descendants of my William Gilliam (d. 1831) named Abigail, but didn't find any. However, his son William Gilliam Jr. (or III???) named a son Jackson, in or about 1830. Still, I imagine that would as likely be in honor of Andrew Jackson as in honor an uncle-in-law William Jackson. Notify Administrator about this message?
