Clarify, The loyal Southern black man refered to herein
as a Servent, went with Lt. R. C. Gilliam ( Robert "Bob"
C. Gilliam ) as his "Aid" in CSA Service,Lt. Robert C. Gilliam being in command of Older men and boys, was killed
in a Federal Attack usually not made against these type
commands. The reference made to man servent could be changed to " Aid " in CSA Service. At his request the
widow and children welcomed his request to use the name Gilliam, as was common by many Southern Families so
everyone would know, he needed a last name to be recognized. He stayed around Locksburg where the
family of Lt. Robert C." Bob " Gilliam resided highly
respected. Many many Southern Blacks adopted the family name of their former owners and worked like everybody else
raising their own families, too." STATEMENT " I just happen to be named Bobby, and knew the story first hand from
this Severe County, Ar. Family. The Black Gilliam
family and the White Gilliam family were well known in
Locksburg, Ark. My father and I both have visited
many of them. My own Grandmother, a Burks, where the black families adopted the Burks name, too. Now the Sons of Confederate Vetruns Highly respect the Confederate Services are recognizing their Services, back then a loyal black family, rather than being refered to as Gilliam Negros or Blacks or Colored people were welcomed to honor the family by using their Surname. I was raised to call them Uncle or Antie out of respect. The Gilliam family of Sevier County, we have known for Generations.Good Bless. I can reply because I know the family well. Private family papers are not destroyed. They remain Private. Be proud of your Southern ARKANSAS Heritage. I sure am.
My Gilliams were in SE. Arkansas. Not Severe.
Reply from: Bob Gilliam (lots of Bobby, Bob, Robert being
called Bob ).
