Mr. Giddens,
The family record of Mary (Jarratt) Gilliam (b. 1724), wife of William Gilliam, identifies her mother as Elizabeth Wingfield. The family record is found in a Bible published in 1766, last known to be in the possession of a cousin in New Jersey. It was transcribed in 1891, a copy of which is on file at the McClung Historical Collection in Knoxville, Tennessee.
To be precise, the entry pertaining to Mary (Jarratt) Gilliam, identifies her as the daughter of "Deveroux" Jarratt and his wife, Elizabeth, "formerly Wingfield."The entry gives New Kent County as Mary's place of birth and this is corroborated by the St. Peter's Parish Register, which identifies the birth of a daughter, Mary to Devereux Jarratt as well as a daughter, Elizabeth, to Thomas Wingfield.Thomas Wingfield was the only Wingfield to reside in New Kent County during this period.
Devereux Jarratt and Elizabeth (Wingfield) had four children recorded as being christened in the St. Peter's Parish Register.
This Gilliam family originated in New Kent County.Their connection to the Wingfield family, through the Jarratts, occurred in New Kent County.Mary Jarratt (b.1724), married William Gilliam and they soon after left New Kent County, eventually ending up in Albemarle Co., VA in the 1750s.They resided in the area that was to become Buckingham County.
Much inaccurate information has appeared about the Gilliam family in general and the family of William and Mary (Jarratt) Gilliam in particular.William Gilliam, spouse of Mary Jarratt, was not connected to the Gilliams who intermarried with the Henrys, for example.
