Pamela: Sorry to be so slow about replying; I need to check the forum more frequently. Oliver Gillett has been a most elusive character in my research. In fact, he has been so elusive that I sometimes wonder if he really existed or was merely an invention of someone desperate to fill a gap in a pedigree chart. I know now that Lyman Gillett (Oliver's reputed son) did exist; I have a copy of his will. But I still have been unable to find the slightest trace of Oliver. When I first learned of Oliver, I asked the person who gave me his name for supporting sources. She said she was sure she had sources but she couldn't find them--an immediate red flag! Here is what I was told about Oliver. He was born 1755/1760 in Simsbury, Hartford, Connecticut, a son of Isaac Gillett (b. 16 May 1720 1720 in Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut) and Honora Stevens (born 17 October 1721 in Simsbury, Hartford, Connecticut). Isaac was the great-great grandson of the Nathan Gillett ( son of Rev. William Gyllet, Rector of Chaffcombe), who arrived in Massachusetts around 1630. Honora was the daughter of Thomas Stevens and Miriam Buell. Miriam' father, Sergeant Peter Buell, was a descendant of another long-time New England family, and her mother was Mary Gillett, granddaughter of Nathan Gillett's brother Jonathan. So my Oliver, if he exists, was descended from two of the sons of Rev. William Gyllet of Chaffcombe. According to my informant, Oliver married Louisa Moore, supposedly the daughter of James Moore and Mary Norton, about whom I know nothing. I know that a man named Moore was one of the witnesses of Lyman Gillett's will, but that is scant evidence of Lyman's mother's name. Your August 16 posting to the furum lists another name for Oliver's wife, which is of course, a problem for me. Another problem for me is that your August 16 posting says that one of your Oliver's children was born in 1792. That is troublesome to me, because Lyman was supposedly born 30 April 1792. Right now, all this information is, to say the least, confusing. But maybe someone else on the forum can resolve the confusion. In any event, let's keep each other in mind if and as we learn more. Dale
