Wolcott-Gillette ties

We have always been told that our Gillette ancestors traced back to Oliver Wolcott, signer of the Declaration of Independence. I see many uses of Wolcott as a middle name in our Gillette ancestors. Anyone know of a solid connection?
We have found a George Wolcott Gillette, died 1903 in NYC, as well as a George W.C. Gillette, died 1896 NYC.
