While researching this name, I discovered that there are THREE Asa Gillets born about the same time and in the same area, although not the same state. Two were born in 1764 and the other in 1759, but that is close enough to the other two to add to the confusion. In addition, they all descend from Jonathan Gillet, one of the two Gillet brothers who arrived in the colonies in 1635.
Starting with the earliest birth date: Asa Gillet, son of Jonathan Gillet and his wife Abigail Hubbard was born in 1759 in Bloomfield, Hartford, CT. He married Violet Case in 1778 in Windsor, Hartford, CT. He died in 1827, according to what is published in online trees, but I have not found the location of his death nor have I found any military records for this man.
Asa Gillet, b. 11 June 1764 in Litchfield, CT (Litchfield Town Records, v. 1, p. 221) to Asa Gillet and his wife Ann Pettibone. He married Naomi Hosford in 1787; she died on 30 Jan 1828 (Litchfield, v.2, p.2). He applied for a pension in Dauphin, PA in 1818, later moved to Michigan where he died in Clinton, Lenawee county c. 1839. He was granted a pension (No. S34898).
Asa Gillet, b. 08 Jul 1764 in Amenia, Dutchess, NY (Amenia, NY Church Records, NYG&B Record, 1904, v. 35, p. 110), just over the border from Litchfield, CT, to Amos Gillet and his wife Sarah Bentley. As an adult, Asa lived in New Paltz, Ulster county, NY, where he settled, bought land and married Abigail (“Nabby”) Mills in 1787. He died in Italy, NY in 1817 when it was still part of Ontario county. His widow remarried and when her second husband died, she applied for a pension in 1844 based on Asa’s service. Asa left no documentation of his service so all of what she knew was hearsay and her application was denied. A friend of Asa’s testified that Asa has served as a dragoon during the Revolutionary War and as I found a page in Abigail’s application that MAY belong to Asa Gillet (1764-1839) who was also a dragoon, I wonder if the pension department confused one for the other. There is also the possibility that both Asas served in the same unit.
Asa, son of Amos Gillet, is my 5th great-grandfather. My goal is to find concrete proof of his service and enter it into the DAR Others who have posted trees containing Amos and Sarah Gillet include their sons Amos and Joseph but not Asa; he appears to be rather lost and forgotten. He has not gotten the recognition he deserves, both as a soldier and as the father of at least five children, as his daughter testifies to in her affidavit in her mother’s pension application.
Any information on this line of Gillets would be greatly appreciated. To cover all the bases, this message is also posted to the Gillet and Gillett pages on this forum. Sorry for the repetition.
