In Grimes abstracts of North Carolina wills is the following abstract: John Gillett Craven County May 17, 1749 October 18, 1749 Sons: John, Patterson, Anderson, Moses Executors: John Harper, Priscilla Hall Witnesses: John Simmons, Emmanuel Simmons, Mary Dudley I am interested in knowing about this Priscilla Hall. She married my ancestor William Burton about 1751 and by 1752 they moved to the Kenansville area of Duplin Co, NC. While in Craven Co, NC, William Burton lived in the area around Mill Creek, south of the Trent River and east of Pollocksville, in present-day Jones Co, NC. This is also the area where Lemuel Hatch lived and apparently. Do you have an electronic copy of the will of John Gillett? I wonder why Priscilla Hall was made an executor? Is she somehow related? Bob Burton in Gainesville, FL 11/19/1744: William Burton enters 50 acres in Craven Co, NC on north side of Trent River about 50 yards below Cordies Landing. Recorded in North Carolina Land Entries 1735-1752. 11/19/1744: William Burton enters 200 acres in Craven Co, NC, borders Jacob Reasonover, includes a beaverdam near Trent River (runs from Comfort to Trenton to Pollocksville to New Bern); rites proved in Council. Recorded in North Carolina Land Entries 1735-1752. 11/20/1744: William Burton was admitted to the North Carolina Council held at Newbern to prove his rights in Craven Co, NC. His household consisted of 3 whites and 2 blacks. A Robert Savage also was admitted with a family of 13 whites and 1 black. On 11/22/1744, William Burton petitioned the council for a warrant for 200 and 50 acres in Craven Co, NC. Recorded in Council Minutes. Is this he who became William Burton of Duplin Co, NC. 1744: William Burton appears on the Tax List in Craven Co, NC. Recorded in book "North Carolina Taxpayers". This is only an index to NC Archive microfilm rolls 115.49 and 155.108. 1749: Priscilla Hall and John Harper were appointed executors of the will of John Gillett. 11/10/1750: Wm Burton, mill wright of Craven Co, to Priscilla Hall and Lemuel Hatch, Esq, a marriage is intended between Wm Burton and Priscilla Hall, widow, for the goods he will receive and to preserve the goods to Priscilla and her 2 children. Burton agrees with Hatch that immediately after the marriage, Burton will occupy and enjoy his own goods and chattels, .....which are not in Priscilla Hall"s possession; Burton will dispose of the property as follows: (a) negro girl Doll, a feather bed, a mare, iron kettle, pot trammel, and 2 cows and calves for benefit of Elizabeth, eldest daughter of Priscilla, (b) 2 cows and calves, a mare, feather bed, iron kettle, pot trammel, next child negro Jenny may bring forth that lives to age 2 for benefit of Rebecca, yougest daughter of Priscilla, (c) negro woman Jenny, 6 cow and calves, 50 pds for benefit of Priscilla; it's also agreed Priscilla can, in her lifetime or in her will, dispose of as she sees fit the negro woman Jenny and her increase, except as mentioned and the 50 pds. Wit: Mary West and Jame Lipsey. Witness oath 3/24/1758 by James Lipsey and Mary Murphy "called" Mary West before Peter Henly. Recorded in Craven Co, NC Deed Book 9&10, page 457. Jun 1751: Court ordered that John Harper return all the effects that was attached by him against William Burton. Recorded in Craven Co, NC County Court Minutes. Apr 1752: William Burton petitioned the NC Executive Council for a land grant of 100 acres in Duplin Co, NC. 4/27/1752: Patterson Gillett and John Gillett sold to Lemuel Hatch, for 40 pds, 156 acres on the south side of the Trent River on the west side of Simmons Branch, being land said Patterson Gillett now lives on, it being part of land granted to John Gillett in 1738 and transferred from said John Gillett Sr to said John Gillett Jr to said Patterson Gillett by deed. Wit: Nathan Parsons, John Lale, Ann Gillett. 9/26/1753: William Burton received a land patent for 400 acres in Duplin Co, NC on the west side of the NE branch of Cape Fear, joining the north side of Persimmon Branch, Condrick Whitman and Bonneys Branch.
