Gillett is a Bergerac name and is spelled many ways: Gillet, Gillette, Gylett, Gallett, Gylot, Gylet, Gelot and Gilet. Bergerac, located in the province of Guyenne in southwestern France, was founded by monks in the eleventh century. It is believed my ancestor, Rev. Jacques de Gylet, lived there and was present at the Massacre of St. Bartholomew in Paris in August, 1572. Thereafter, because he continued to preach the Gospel, he was banished from Bergerac, his property confiscated and his life threatened. He and his family fled to Scotland and emigrated to England. He was either the father or grandfather of Rev. William Gylett, rector of the Anglican Church at Chaffcombe, Somerset, England, and the father of Jonathan Gillet, who emigrated to America in 1630. This essay tells the history of the Huguenots, which explains why the family escaped from France for Scotland and England and then emigrated to America (Aldridge 12, 15; Baird 144; Fosdick 38).
