Gillette, Smith, Bowles, KY to TX 1820's
Posted by: Linne Bowles Gravestock Date: July 04, 1999 at 00:30:40
  of 1177

Benjamin BOWLES b. 1784, m. Elizabeth JEFFRIES in Barren Co., KY in May 1810.
They had:
Julia m. SAMPLE
Almira Wilson m. Sylvester BOWEN and Henry WILCOX
Martha Smith m. Roswell GILLETT
Henry S. m. Martha Ann WHITE
Jesse P. m. Ann HOBSON and Mattie NORWOOD
Sarah M. m. Elijah MAXEY
Mary Jane m. Joseph FESSENDEN
Elizabeth J. m. Robert INGRAHAM
Margaret J. (nothing known)

This family went from Barren Co., KY to Cumberland Co., KY in about 1812, to Overton Co., TN in 1816, and then were found in MO by 1825. In 1827 they went from Lincoln Co., MO to Brazoria Co., TX. The children of Ben and Betsey BOWLES, above, stayed mostly in the south Texas counties for at least a couple of generations.
Elizabeth Jeffries'parents were Daniel Jeffries and Patsy SMITH. Patsy's brother was Henry SMITH, who later went on to become the first governor of Texas. He married three GILLETT sisters, Harriet, Elizabeth and Sarah (one at a time!). Roswell GILLETTE, mentioned above, was a prominent minister in Bee Co., TX.
Also, Patsy SMITH JEFFRIES' parents were James SMITH and Magdalen WOODS.

If you have any information on any of these families, please let me know. I have quite a bit on the BOWLES line to share.
Linne Bowles Gravestock
