Gillet DNA project

I organized a Gillet DNA study after receiving several emails from people interested in it. This is only a Y-chromosome DNA study, so only males can contribute their DNA. Basically, men with the surname Gillet, Gillett, Gillette, Jelett, or any spelling variant can contribute. Female Gillet descendants need to find a male to contribute. It also encompasses the variant spellings because my ancestor's descendants today use two different spellings. I really don't know how my Gillett ancestor spelled his own surname. I want to encourage everyone with the various spellings to contribute, even if you know your ancestors have always spelled it one way. You can help people like me get through our brick walls.

We have a Gillett DNA project currently going with five participants through FamilyTreeDNA. FamilyTreeDNA has a lot of DNA analysis tools which make it easier to compare lineages. Their website is http://www.familytreedna.com/ if you want to look at their services. One of the benefits of organizing a surname DNA project through them is the discount in their services.

FamilyTreeDNA offers a free webpage, and the one for the Gillet project is here:

I like what a group of Harrells have done with their website. The Harrell website (just for example purposes) is http://harrelldna.com/ and what I especially like is how they arranged their results. Notice they use a five-digit random number assigned to each individual's DNA results to maintain privacy. They also link the DNA results with the person's furthest back documented ancestor.

FamilyTreeDNA is the company associated with the National Geographic Society's Genographic project. Several people indicated to me that they had already participated in the Genographic project. The DNA analysis they used is the 12-marker analysis. This is a good starting point for genealogy purposes and we can use it as is for our DNA project. FamilyTreeDNA also offers 25, 37, and 59-marker analyses. There are special discounts for people who participated in the Genographic project to upgrade their DNA analysis.

I want to emphasize that I do not personally collect DNA samples or money. That is all done directly through FamilyTreeDNA or the Genographic project. There may be other genealogy DNA analysis companies out there. If so, the results could also be used. Privacy is important to me and probably to all of you. As group administrator for the Gillett DNA project, I do not need to know anyone's name or address or anything like that, just the DNA results (12, 25, 37, or 59 numbers) and the furthest back documented ancestor.

The more people who participate, the better our results will be.

Heather
