Do you have more information on William? My ggggrandmother was Sarah Gillespie, her father was William Gillespie, and I do believe he would have fought in the Revoluioary War. I grew up here, near Pittsburgh, PA and I have found the location of at least one Gillespie homestead. My ggggrandfather, Robert Elwood, was married to Sarah Gillespie and his brother, George, was married to her sister.
Unfortunately, all the word of mouth and informal documents indentify George's wife as "Miss Gillespie". And that is only the beginning of the confusion when it comes to George Elwood and his relationship with the Gillespie family. He had two boys in his marriage to Miss Gillespie, William and Robert Elwood. Both inherited William Gillespie's homestead, which to this day is owned by his descendants.
"My" William Gillespie lived about 30 miles from Pittsburgh, PA. Much closer to Greensburg, PA in Westmoreland County, PA. This might help you because Pittsburgh is in Allegheny County, PA. But it doesn't much matter if you are talking about the time period prior to 1810 or so because it was all Westmoreland County at that time.
