He served the Union during the Civil War as a pvt. in Co.C37th Mted.Inf.(which later may have been detached to serve with the 8th Reg. of the Union Tenn. Volunteers ?). He is buried in New Albany Nat'l Cemetery. He was born in Hawkins Cty., Tenn. His father, John Marion (3/2/1812 to 1/30/1862) may have moved his family to Monroe Cty.,Kentucky sometime around 1852...because of his wife's
(Matilda Mae Simmons) uncle owning some farmland in Monroe Cty.John Marion Gillenwater(s) father was Thomas Gillenwater(s)1790-1865 (Hawkins Cty.,Tenn.)
Thomas' father was Joel Gillenwater(s) 1760(?) -1837/Mother Loretta Gibbons (1764?) Joel b. in Hawkins Cty.,Tenn..buried Hickory Cove, Hawkins Cty.
