You would have to have a male relative of your mother take the test to gain a DNA test relative to the Gillenwater(s) lineage. It requires a Y-Chromosome to track.
Most American male Gillenwaters will match each other and have a common ancestor. The Gillenwater DNA Project will take definitive shape when more participate. In other surname projects, there are distinctly different likes of the surname. I have eight different family lines in the Yarbrough DNA Project. Some Yarbrough’s do not match any Yarbrough DNA and some can be determined to match other surnames and vice versa.
It has taken me three years to get over 40 participants in the Yarbrough DNA Project.
Females take a mtDNA test that tracks the mother to daughter lineage and is difficult to understand - for me.
Of course I enclurage you to find a male Gilenwater and arrange a test.
