Dear sam west
I do not know that the Gill surname was well known in Scotland.
I was told by my dad that is was an North of England name from the Irish-Norse word (Gilli) form Old Irish (Giolla) servent who came from Ireland to settal in Cumbria where i live and North yorkshire.
I am from Dentdale on the Cumbrian, North Yorkshire boarder. The surname is very common around here. I went to school with 5 Gill's in my class and in the local phone book they are quite common.
I might be wrong about the surname Gill in Scotland.
