That's what I found, too. But the source I saw said the word was Old Norse "gjul", meaning a ravine or gully.Lots of those on the Devon coast where our ancestors lived by the ravines. Also lots of Viking incursions to introduce Old Norse words!
Some where I also read that Gill means "shield bearer," later applied to a serving person. So forget a Gill crest!
