I guess we are related. My great grandfather James Gilfillan BA Queens University 1842-1905, the Principal of Bowmanville HS had an older brother Joe Gilfillan who went to Mitchell, South Dakota after the Civil War. They had a farm in Orono, Ontario in then what was known as Upper Canada. They obtained Crown Land from the British to settle in Ontario. They were what Canadians refer to as Late Empire Loyalists who came after the War of 1812. They came from the New York side. The old man Joe Gilfillan was born in Vermont ca 1792. They were Yankees. His wife was Abbie named after the First Lady Abigail Adams. He is buried in the family plot in Bowmanville Cemetery in Ontario. There is a huge stone there that says "COME HOME." The Joseph Gilfillan line went to South Dakota; the James Gilfillan line remained in Ontario.
My grandfather John J Gilfillan (1870-1945) and his sister Viola (1873-1973) were first cousins of the ones in Mitchell, South Dakota. They both graduated the Univerity of Toronto. He was a pharmacist, she was a high school French teacher.
The decendants of Joseph Lynn Gilfillan are still there in South Dakota for over 140 years I believe.
That's all I know. I don't tell you everything!
