Thank you for your email.
I have just started researching my paternal ancestry, so I cant answer all your questions at this present time. However, at the moment I know there were two Robert Gilfillans born in 1834 in Glasgow. I have a researcher trying to find Robert's marriage to Mary Doyle (family from Ireland). This was a 'mixed marriage', the Doyles were catholics, the Gilfillans Protestants. They mayhave married on the borders(Scotland/England).This will hopefully give me his parents names and also I can then try to obtain his birth certificate which will give me any middle names. One of their children John, whom you mentioned was born in 1860.All their children were born in Morpeth, NE ENGLAND. The family eventually moved to Winlaton, Co Durham where a few of the Gilfillans are buried today. In fact I was viewing Alexander Gilfillan's grave yesterday (my Great Grandfather), another child of Robert Gilfillan.
I havent confirmed it yet but yes I am almost sure they emigrated to America.
I hope I can find out a lot more information and I will send it to you at some future date.It has taken me 9 months to research my maternal ancestry Im sure you know how much searching is required.
Best wishes
Valerie Hastie
