Montgomery Gilbreath's relatives
Ethel Emily Nicholson Whitman and her daughter Helen
Adair Whitman were charter members of Peter Turney Chapter UDC, Winchester, TN in 1927. Would like to find where each died and was buried as well as an obituary for each. The following is information from the membership applications:
"Applicant: Ethel Emily Nicholson (Mrs. Robert E. Whitman, Sr.) Winchester, Tennessee
I was born on the 19th day of February 1878; near Collinsville, DeKalb County, Alabama. I am the daughter of Marshal [only one "l"] M. Nicholson who belonged to Company B 3rd Regiment Cavalry Alabama.
Remarks:
Marshal M. Nicholson was a commissioned officer with the rank of Lieutenant of 3rd Confederate Cavalry regiment. He served four years and seventeen days and never was reported unable for duty. He was Adjutant of the regiment, a brave and gallant officer and surrendered at Jonesboro, after
Lee, in April 1865."
The following is from the application of Helen Adair Whitman:
"Miss Helen Adair Whitman, Winchester, Tennessee
I was born on the 6th day of Dec. 1902 Albertville, Marshal [only one "l"] County, Alabama. I am the granddaughter of Jim P. Whitman who belonged to Company K 4th Regiment Cavalry Alabama.
Remarks: James P. Whitman was Sgt. of Co. K. He was in the battles of Chicamauga [sic], the Dalton and Atlanta Campaign and was wounded at Parker's Crossroads. 'Jim P. Whitman was always in his place and known by all. I had frequent opportunities to observe him under conditions of danger and distress that tried men's souls. He was a true and loyal soldier of the South, as modest as he was brave.' (By John A. Wyethe, a world renown surgeon, Paris, France.) Montgomery Gilbreath (my great-grandfather) was
Capt., then elected Lieutenant Colonel of the 48th Alabama Regiment. Marshal M. Nicholson (my maternal grandfather) was Lieutenant 3rd Con. Cavalry Co. B. also Adjutant of the Reg. a brave and gallant officer under Gen. Joseph Wheeler and surrendered after Gen. Lee in April 1865."
