I am under the impression that the Gilbee spelling may be a variation of O' Kilbey from Ireland. Most of the Gilbee's, if I remember right, who are spelt that way are found in the US and Australia, with the exception of a couple of families located in the UK and South Africa. Maybe somewhere down the bloodline we have had an ancestor who might have been banished from the UK, maybe a thief, or something near those lines, and came to US and Australia as a prisoner seeing how both countries were used a penal colonies a long time ago.
