W. Wray,
After doing much research the past few months I think I may have found the ancestors of Timothy Gilbert born 1793 of Nixonton, NC. In 'Migration to Whitewater Valley"-1820-1830- by Chelsea L.Lawlis and the "Indiana Magazine of History" published by University Dept.of History, conveyance by Aaron White , Richmond, Indiana, to Timothy Gilbert on July 1, 1829.
Aaron white and Josiah Gilbert moved from NC to Indiana apparently around this time.
My ancestor is Timothy Gilbert-born 1793- of Nixonton and Elizabeth City, NC, Pasquotank County. I wonder if Aaron White sold his land in NC to my ancestor Timothy Gilbert because he moved, or if this is a different Timothy Gilbert.
While following Aaron White's ancestors/relatives, I noticed William White and Anthony Slocumb are living in Rhode Island before moving to Chowan,County NC. The daughter of William Charles, Joan/Jean left a will mentioning one Andrew "Gilberd" -this was before 1700 in Albemarle. Older Josiah Gilbert's surname is spelled "Gilberd" in the earliest census of Perquimans, NC. Also, one Andrew Gilbert of Elizabeth City, NC is the relative of my Timothy Gilbert no.1 born 1793. His son is Timothy no.2 born 1843 who married Eliza Wiggins, my ancestors. Timothy 2 lived with one William Charles family after his father died in 1886. At the time Timothy no.1 had just married Millicent Scaff. The Wiggins children married Relfes/Rolfes but I cannot find anything regarding Wiggins/Wickens or Wikkins ancestors.
I just noticed information on the internet stating the daughter of Josiah Gilbert and wife Nixon married a Street
who was from the Nicholas Street family of Taunton. This information seems to tie everyone together in one way or another.
A Currituck, NC cousin sent family information saying one branch of the Gilbert family moved to the mountains and married into an indian tribe. They may have been the Joseph Gilbert grandsons of Anthony Slocum. After researching for years to find the parents of my Gilbert ancestor, Josiah Gilbert of Chowan, NC, it seems his parents were from the family line of Joseph Gilbert born 1731 and Mary Begley[ or Bagley] and son Joseph Gilbert and Martha Johnston who had Benjamin, William, my Timothy 1793,Nancy and Sarah . Joseph the father is shown as having been married at least three times. Their aunt married a Gregory whose family is part of my cousin Oscar's group from Norfolk, Va..Timothy B. Gilbert who married Maria Walker would be a half-brother to my Timothy Gilbert of Pasquotank, Elizabeth City, NC.
One of the Gilbert ancestors left 100,000 acres of land, including a Gilbert Cemetery, in the Blue Ridge Mountains which is now a state park. It was so long ago no one can recall which ancestor deeded the land.
DNA matches all lead to the ancestors of President George H.W. Bush His Gilbert matches include Moses Gilbert who married Mary Gilbert, and Josiah who md. Sarah Lord, among others.I had a maternal DNA match with the Bush/Pierce family line through Elizabeth Slade Pierce/Pearce who married Courtland Butler.
I also have a Butler ancestor through the Pope/Washington family and my Norfolk cousin's grandmother married a Randolph.
Something else of interest is Farnfold Green was a son in law of the Kent side of the family. He and Anthony Slocum were in Bath County cir 1700 where Farnfeld/Farnifeld Green was killed in a indian raid. I read somewhere that Mary Kent was also killed. Frances Gilbert and one Jesse Gilbert -whose sister is supposed to be Penelope who married Jeremiah Pratt-are also at Bath Co. His sons are Frances, Hennrey and Timothy.
I am thinking the William Gilbert who is evidently the brother of my Timothy Gilbert 1793 of Nixonton, NC married into the Strickland family who went to Georgia.
Now I need to find documentation for all of these people.
Best regards,
Sammie
