W.Ray,
I have thought my last message to you 'to death' and decided to take a break from that group for a while.
Without the information before me I hesitate to write from memory too much.
I would be very surprised to find out your Gilberts and mine are not related. This information is written from memory because my genealogy is stored among many other boxes in a storage facility at the moment. In the area of Chowan CO NC, research is confusing to say the least.
Timothy GilbertI, born 1793, of Pasquotank, NC has a connection to the Gilberts who are buried in the Gilbert Cemetery in Camden,NC. They seem to be descendants of Robert Gilbert. Robert being a descendant of James and Robert having a son James who married Catherine Maria Lockwood. I have a copy of a death record of James Gilbert, son of Robert, whose descendant was named after her grandmother Dollie by her grandfather, James. Lambs and Sawyers married into the Gilbert family.
Walter Raleigh Gilbert who is buried in the Hollywood Cemetery at Elizabeth City, NC is a relative of Timothy Gilbert. Andrew Gilbert in the 1850 census who married Ann Turner, the father Stephen Gilbert,Franklin Gilbert in the census who married Elizabeth Poole, Wilson Gilbert who married Jane, and the Wiggins family who married Relfes are all related to Timothy also.
The other Timothy born in 1843 married Mariah Walker and went to Norfolk, Va,. This Norfolk, VA Timothy is said to be the nephew of my Nixonton TimothyI born 1793.
Blance Gilbert who married a Walker,Penelope Gilbert who married a Davis and lived in VA a while before returning to Edenton later are relatives.
The old James Gilbert in the Bertie Co NC census of 1850 with his old sister Penelope Davis living there appear to be related to my Gilberts. This James was married several times. One wife appears to be a Renfro and I think these Renfro's have a connection to my dad's Pearce family of Washington Co Tn..
Great grandfather Timothy Griffin GilbertII was granted a leave of absence from the Civil War to visit Colerain, Bertie Co NC, to visit his relatives.
My older TimothyI may be the brother of John Gilbert who married Peggy Spence. It appears their sons were John , Thomas and William.
My older Timothy's son Isaac N. Gilbert is shown as a court clerk and as Esquire in Currituck, NC court records. Isaac was killed in the Civil War. His brother Oliver married Martha V. Simpson whose father was Richard. Oliver owned a grocery-general store in Edenton. Brother James married Catherine Osendton. James and Catherine had children Blanch who married a Midyett, and Lloyd Walker Gilbert. They are listed in Washington Co death records.
Timothy GilbertII is mentioned in the estate record of Henry Luton whose wife was named Penelope. Timothy was a tailor who made a coat for Luton's son. Timothy was the Elizabeth City postmaster in 1840 with 9 children to support.
It appears my Gilberts are related to the Wm. Gilbert and Nancy or Nicy Gilbert family line, but with no DNA project members from Mabel's family yet there is no proof either way.
Because my Gilbert's married Walkers, I cannot help but wonder if you and I are related. Two of the Gilbert ancestors with no time line written down are said to be Charles, with a brother named Thomas and sister named Ann. A Charles Gilbert can be found with the Mabel Gilbert family around 1800 or so living at Bear Creek with Tivis and James in Dickenson Co NC/TN. Mabel's brother Wilson is also living there.
Nicholas Gilbert of Tyrell, NC with sons James, William and Nicholas Jr could be the ancestor of William Gilbert of Martin Co NC and Wm. of Pasquotank. On the internet the father of one Nicholas Gilbert is shown as Brittain Gilbert. There was a Brittain Gilbert in Raleigh, NC when my grgrandfather's brother Martin Van Buren was living there and working as a desk clerk in a hotel.
I have a copy of Timothy SR's estate record. After Isaac Gilbert was killed in the war, the estate was turned over to Timothy Jr. with Wm.Skinner assisting.
Grandfather Gilbert said the Shaw family was related but did not say how. One older Timothy Gilbert married Fear Shaw. The Fearing surname is found in Pasquotank.
This information may not help with your search for your Gilbert group, but our relatives have crossed paths many times. Timothy was also related to a Hawkins family of Pasquotank Co.
When I find the copy of Timothy Gilbert's court records I will post some names in the document to the forum.
Everyone is appreciative of you and your endless good deeds, as well as the time and effort you have put forth to connect various Gilbert families with the correct ancestors. Thank you for your help. I have learned so much from you in regard to all of the Gilbert families. It is hard to believe there are at least 50 different unrelated Gilbert surname families in the DNA project.
Best regards,
Sammie
