W. Ray Walker RE: Thomas Gilbert of Albemarle, Lower Norfolk Co.
W. Wray,
I have been following the Gilbert line of the Albemarle, VA area because my Gilberts lived at Norfolk and the Chesapeake City area. You are the only person I can think of who may have some answers to my questions.
My cousin had a DNA test with results posted at Jane Gilbert's web site. His DNA matched that of a Norfolk Va cousin.
As there is no right place to begin this tale, I will start off with Thomas Gilbert of Chowan Co who was associated with John Outlaw as his lawyer. Capt. John Outlaw lived on Lower Norfolk CO western branch of the Elizabeth River in 1669 as shown by the appointment of Thomas Gilbert as his lawyer.
June 12, 1675-Capt. Wm. Robinson served as presiding judge and magistrate of Lower Norfolk[Princess Anne Co]. He heard a case involving Wm. Carver, former sheriff, surveyor andmember of the House of Burgesses, until Gov. Wm. Berkley suspended his commissions."Carver plead not guilty by reason of insanity" and "while laboring under a abboration of the mind" he killed Thomas Gilbert who was sitting next to him at dinner, by stabbing him with a knife. Have you any idea if this Thomas Gilbert had an association with the Cleveland family?
This leads us to Jones Co GA and the John Culpepper family. John Culpepper was born in Bertie Co NC in 1733, and his father was Joseph of Edgecombie.Joseph is the grandson of Henry of Norfolk. DNA has proven the lineage of Henry Culpepper of Lower Norfolk Va..
In a deed dated 14OCT1783 at Anson Co NC Jesse Gilbert was a witness to a will, as was Gideon Green. Also a witness was Michael Auld clerk. This Michael Auld is probably my mother's ancestor. The name is spelled Auld, Ault, Ewald,Ewalt, DeVauld, DeVault and several other ways.
Another Thomas Gilbert and wife Eady of Washington Co Ga deeded land to Thomas Wilborn of Wilkes Co NC. Witnesses were John Culpepper and Henry Stokes. Delivered by Thos. Gilbert 14MAR1797. Edw. Bryan, JP.
Leonora Gilbert 1745-1823 married in 1764 Sampson Culpepper, son of Joseph and Martha of Anson Co NC.. Do you know how she is related to Thomas Gilbert of Chowan and Norfolk?
Around 1780 or so Thomas Gilbert and Samson Culpepper were in Fayatteco KY and stayed a while. They decided to go to Ga because of so many indian raids on Grants Fort.
I noticed a Nathan Gilbert in 1805 who was a preacher at Skywarkey Church in Martin Co NC. My Timothy Gilbert was a few miles down the road at Nixonton. Nathan was born in Jones Co [I believe the information said Jones Co]. Many of the people at Skywarkey Church moved to Stewart Co Tn around 1800. Around that same time in Tn my Ford ancestors showed up as members of the church. Nicholas Gilbert and his wife Elizabeth were early members of the Skywarkey Church in Martin Co.. The William Gilbert and Nancy Morris family are his descendants. A cousin from Currituck, NC says they are related to us. I believe Timothy's ancestor/relative may have been Thomas Gilbert who was maybe? related to the family of Nicholas Gilbert of Tyrell and Martin Co NC. Nicholas also had sons Nicholas Jr andJames. The older James Gilbert of Wake Co NC is also thought to be related to my Timothy of Pasquotank.
I have tried in vain to contact a William and Nicy {Nancy} Gilbert descendant to ask about any cousins she may have who would take a DNA test. Her ancester as well as mine were in Texas at the same place and I went to school with her cousins.
Sorry this is so long. Mother has as a ancestor Walter Gibson who can be found in Wilkes Co NC with his brothers petitioning the King. As it turns out Walter was one of the last remaining Tuscarora Indian Chiefs who signed a land grant in 1777. His daughter married Joseph Culpepper of Anson Co NC and Morgan Co Ga. and they all moved to Wilkes Co Ga.. Walter's son Sylvanus is mother's ancestor, He is shown as Sylvester in the census of Wilkes Co NC..
Also, in the 1820 census of NC Timothy Gilbert is living at Edenton/Nixonton/Plymouth a few houses down from the indian Fivekiller. Fivekiller has a connection on my mother's side of the family.
Timothy Gilbert married Eliza Wiggins. I have no information about her but noticed the Chowan/Pasquotank NC marriage records show the Wiggins families married Relfes. The ancestor of our Norfolk cousin married a Randolph and then a Gilbert. The Ellis ancestor married into the Washington/Jordan family. These families are connected to many famous Patriots.
One last question, do you happen to know anything about the family of Rev.John Benge Gilbert? He is living in KY. around 1800 and is the man who discovered the body of Chief Red Bird floating in a river and then buried him.
Thank you for any information you can offer. I really appreciate the effort you have put forth over the years to help Gilbert research and researchers record their family history.
Best regards,
Sammie
