Denise,

Researching yourself is the best way to learn about your family as opposed to hoping you find someone who knows something. You already know plenty to get going. If you don't know how to do genealogy research and what records are available to help, that should be your first step. Birth and death certificates weren't required until the early 1900s, so you won't find those for your William.

Your best bet for accessing censuses for free online is probably www.heritagequest.com, but I believe you have to get login information from your local library which sets you up for access to the website. Sometimes you can find the censuses online at individual county research sites, but you'd have to know what county to look to first.

Here's the 1860 census entry. Note that data in the censuses can be wrong.

1860 Census Fremont, Alpena Co., Michigan

John B Gilbert 53 New York
Catherine Gilbert 43 Ireland
William Gilbert 11 Michigan
Caroline Gilbert 8 Michigan

Good luck with your Gilbert puzzle!

Jane
