Listed as buried in the Black Oak Cemetery in DeKalb Co. Ala. are:
Nancy C. (1) 7-26-1851 NA
George W. (1) 2-15-1848 10-28-1919
a short distance away and also in sequence are:
William H. 9-25-1869 1-14-1929
Susie 3-11-1876
George Henry 8-9-1894 3-15-1935
many other Gilberts are also listed in the cemetary.
David Gilbert(son of George W. and Nancy Littlefield Gilbert)had a son george who was shown in David's DeKalb County household as age 3 in 1850 and age 12 in 1860. For some reason, David Gilbert is missing from my 1870 DeKalb Co. census notes.Nor, is son George seen. It's possible they could have moved then returned.
In 1880, a George Gilbert (house 97 97), age 31, is shown with his wife Nancy (24)and 5 children with the eldest listed as Henry age 8.George is listed between two brothers of David Gilbert (Samuel listed 2 houses earlier and Daniel listed 4 houses later), so this George Gilbert would appear to be David Gilbert's son. There are other Gilberts listed nearby in the census and two Stockman household's are located close by in houses 105 and 108.David Gilbert, next to another of his brothers, is listed about 6 pages away in the census.
I have read microfilmed marriage records for DeKalb Co. Ala. and don't have George listed in my notes. That's another reason for wondering if the family left DeKalb then returned by 1880. Please post here(don't mail) more data on your Gilberts (pre 1920), so I can add it to my notes.Apparently, they stayed in DeKalb?Do you have information (names, birthdates, marriages etc) on your grandfather's siblings, aunts and uncles?I'm also interested in the shooting incidence.David Gilbert's brother, William, was murdered by a drunken newspaper editor (appropriately named Stiff)in the 1840's.
As to discrepancies in dates in census and tombstone information, both are commonly in error.Tombstone dates are supplied by relatives and in laws (often much younger)at a time of grieving.I have seen census dates off by 10 years and more.
