The Memorial of Simeon Brooks of the Parish of Wakefield in the County of York
Most Humbly Sheweth
That Your Memorialist purchased from H. Skidgel his claim to Lot No. 96 and from
Gale Davenport the Lot No. 97 on the East side the River St. John in the Parish of
Wakefield but from some error (as he supposes) in the return the Lot No. 95 which
had been assigned to and improved by Henry Skidgel some time since deceased,
was granted to your Memorialist instead of No. 97.Notwithstanding which he
has taken to advantage of this circumstance in his favor but has paid to the Widow
and family of the said Henry Skidgel sixteen pounds with which they are fully
satisfied.
But as he has been at considerable expense in the purchase of the claim and
improvement of the Lot No. 97 there being ten or twelve acres now cleared and
under good cultivation, he prays the said Lot No. 97 may be given to Edward Brooks
his brother who is more in possession and who is desirous of taking out a grant for
the same – your memorialist having nearly received his quota of Land cannot therefore
apply for himself – and he as in duty bound shall ever pray.
County York 20 May 1812
The Memorialist Simeon Brooks is a sober industrious man of good morals who has by
his persevering industry and labor established himself very handsomely in the farming
line.Edward Brooks is likewise a sober industrious young man was qualifed to improve

The Memorial of Jonas Partridge a married man aged about sixty years -

Humbly Sheweth
That Your Memorialist Jonas Partridge has had a grant of Two hundred,
which he has been deprived of having unfortunately incurring debts that
he was unable to pay; That he has purchased from James Hallett, a
Tract of Land improved by him, on the West side of the River St. John,
adjoining the Grant to Daniel Dunham and Catharine Dayton, on the lower
side, containing between two & three hundred acres - upon which he
has resided upwards of eight years, and has about twenty acres under
cultivation - and a dwelling House and small Barn erected thereon ~ That
Your Memorialist Peter Guiggy has been five years residing upon a Tract
of land, containing three hundred acres, on the West side of the River
St. John, adjoining Jonas Partridge's lower lines(?), upon which he had
about twenty acres under cultivation; and a House and Barn erected
thereon, and has never had any land from the Crown.
That Your Memorialist James Lovely applied about ten years ago, for
a tract of land adjoining Peter Guiggy, containing three hundred acres,
upon which he has ever since resided, and has about forty acres
under cultivation, and a House and Barn erected thereon; and has
never had any Grant of Land from The Crown. That Your Memorialist
Joseph Brown, was a Soldier in His Majesty's late(?) 104th Regiment,
and received his Military allotment of one hundred acres; which he
was afterwards induced to exchange with a person of the name
of Thomas Gee, for a lot adjoining below James Lovely; and was
informed by Gee that the had a minute of Council for the same,
which Memorialist is since informed is not the case - That Nathan
Milbury has recently applied for a part of the said tract, and obtained
a minute(?) of Council for 200 acres thereof, which will take a
considerable part of Memorialists improvements, which will be a serious
injury to him and his large helpless Family ~
Your Memorialists beg leave to state, that they are all British born
subjects, except Joseph Brown, who is a native of Amsterdam, from
whence he was removed at the early age of four years ~ that they
are, all of them, of ability to cultivate and improve land according to

1858 DOE on the demise of PETERS against GUIGGY
The defendant Christopher Guiggy EJECTMENT for land in the Parish
of Brighton, in the County of Carleton, described as lot No. 79 containing
250 acres. The lessor of the plaintiff claimed as one of the heirs of than 20 years Henry G.
Clopper, who died in 1838, seized of the lot in question and the adjoining lot No. 78.
The defendantclaimed by adverse possession, and swore that for some years the jury
having before 1831, he had been in possession of a lot of land in Carleton, and made
improvements thereon; that in 1831 he gave UP possession to Clopper, and went to live
on lot No. 78; that Clopper then put him in possession of the whole
of both lots 78 and 79, and that he had held possession of 79 ever since; had built a
house upon it, cleared and cultivated a Part of it and cut timber and fire-wood on it from
front to rear every year. He admitted, however, that when he went to live on No. 78,
Clopper had given him a deed of 50 acres of it in consideration of his improvements on the
lot which he had given up. Lot No. 79 extended from the river St. John nearly two miles
back. The defendant's improvements did not exceed fifteen acres, and were confined
to the front of the lot, near the river, and no side lines had been run by him to the rear.
the defendant had been put in possession of the land by Clopper, his possession would
extend over the whole lot, and the plaintiff could not recover; but if the defendant
went on without authority, his possession would be confined to that part of the land
which he had actually occupied by cultivation or enclosure for twenty years before
the action was brought, and the plaintiff could recover the remainder. Verdict for the
plaintiff, except for the improved land.

1880 Jane Day vs. Amos Bishop, Aroostook. Opinion April 6, 1880.
John Twaddle says he bought of Brainard Guigey a claim which included
what is now known as Lot 15. But there is nothing to show whether Brainard
Guiguy, or those under whom he claimed had been in possession six years
before the date of the treaty. Moreover Twaddle's statement of the extent of
his donation to Mrs. Day is so indefinite, that it would be impossible to found
a judgment for possession upon it. Twaddle says he sold a piece next adjoining
this donation strip to Samuel Farley, in the fall of 1845 ; that Farley occupied
it about two years and died; and then his brother Ezekiel Farley moved on to
it and occupied it about two years. "Then William Day occupied it next after
Farley." Thus far no evidence of any written conveyance whatever, and no
evidence of even a verbal assignment or transfer of possession from Samuel
Farley to Ezekiel. there is no evidence that Ezekiel Farley had any of the, rights
of a person in possession at the date of the treaty. His widow says he had no
deed of it—that Samuel Farley occupied it before her husband, and John Twaddle
before Samuel Farley, and Frederick (not Brainard) Guigey before Twaddle—that
Frederick Guigey lived on it, and "must have been there about two years before
I moved there." This witness' testimony fixes the date of her moving into the
neighborhood in 1837 ; and if she had good foundations for her conclusion that
Frederick Guigey must have been there about two years before she went there,
Frederick and his grantees would appear to have the claim referred to in the
treaty. The witness only says he "might have transferred it to his brother and
his brother to Twaddle." We cannot sustain the demandant's claim upon such
loose and uncertain testimony. Judgment for the defendant.

One of our citizens of Caribou is a victim of Lock Jaw. Chris Giggee,
about 45 years old, living on the Fort Fairfield road, while helping
a male recapture a pig and put it in a box on his sled, met with an
accident that broke his nose.Mr. Giggee had straightened it out and
it entirely healed over when on Tuesday the muscles of the Jaw
set themselves and Dr. Proctor was called in.After learning the
nature of the accident, he put the patient under ether, cut into
the broken nose and found three pieces of hemlock that had slivered
from the door and become lodged there.Mr. Giggee's Jaws are perfectly
rigid, the teeth being only about an eighth of an inch apart and the only
nourishment he takes is in liquid form.
