John Henry Gifford (1843-1913) Laurel, Indiana

I'm working on a project concerning the shipwreck of a US Army transport ship, the Torrent, in Alaska on 15 July 1868. One of the army officers aboard the vessel (everyone survived the shipwreck) was 2nd Lt. John H. Gifford. I have confirmed the following information about this Lt. Gifford:

Born in Indiana. Appointed from Indiana. Cadet at the U.S. Military Academy July 1, 1863; graduated June 17, 1867. Actual rank—Pvt. Co. E, 16th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, April 23, 1861; discharged May 23, 1862; 2d Lieut. 2nd U.S. Art. June 17, 1867; 1st Lieut. Nov. 1, 1874.

Circumstantial evidence points to Lt. Gifford being John Henry Gifford, b. 15 Jun 1843, d. 21 May 1913; married Helen B. Kimberly 29 Apr 1885; oldest of 9 children born to parents Thomas Alden Gifford & Catharine Case. I'm seeking living relations of "either" John H. Gifford for confirmation & information sharing.

Many thanks, ~Steve
