Bartholomew Gidley from Hollacombe Paramour near Winkleigh in Devon bought the Gidleigh estate in 1638. Bartholomew was a very common name in the Gidley family but this Gidley raised the Tinners Regiment for the King during the Civil War. They owned the estate until the middle of the 18th century when they went bankrupt and the property was held in chancery until eventually it was sold to the Reverend Thomas Whipham in 1819. The book "Gidleigh - A Dartmoor Village - Past & Present" traces the history of the village from the middle of the 11th century to the present day.It mentions all the houses and most of the residents from 1650 onwards. It is not meant as a genealogical study but rather a detailed story of how the village developed over the years. We have written the book to help raise money for the maintenance of the village hall so if you would like a copy it would cost £20 + P&P [$43 including P&P] Send a bankers draft for US$ 43 made payable Glebe Publishing to ; Glebe Publishing attn.
