Hi JAmes,

I have family group sheets for the Giddens of Surry Co NC but do not have them in e-file yet. I think one of ways most Giddens researchers have approached this family was to look at the Wilkes Co bunch as related to the Surry Giddens. I have found no connection yet if there is one. I therefore have concluded that a more productive appraoach would be to consider the Wilkes Co Giddens as unrelated (at least not closely)to the Surry bunch. When you make that assumption the only real relationship you have is a probable one to James Giddens, who later moved to Hawkins Co Tenn. There is a book on his family history but great care must be taken when using that info as some of it is not accurate. I would try to use it as a guide to define the scope of the relationship between Reuben and James. As Reuben was probably born in US, James was probably born in Ireland? This would seem to imply a relationship as cousins or possibly uncle nephew. I have fond great confusion about Edward Giddens who was in Wilkes in the 1790's but leaves or dies about 1800. There were two Edwards. One was a son of James and the other was possibly a brother of James. Since the records are not clear during the early 1800's about Edward I have assumed the Edward mentioned was actually the son of James. I think the land records would clarify who was whom. Also the tax records may be helpful. I don't have access to tax records after 1800. If there are probate or administration records those should be checked. Don't forget the James Giddens in Burke Co as early as 1779. Don't have access to Burke records so couldn't follow that lead. That James is too old to be the James who moved to Tenn. Hezekiah Strutton has records in Burke Co. Apparently all these families lived on the Co line which is verified in land and tax records. A curious note about Hiram Giddens, son of Reuben. In the 1850's he moved into the same area of Mo that some of the children and grandchildren of James Giddens had moved. It's a stretch to think Hiram knew any of them but then ... If I can help in any way please let me know.
