Joel Gibson, b. 1749, d. 1846.Scotch-Irish descent, soldier in Amer. Rev., born in Eng. or Ireland.Settled in Wilkes Co., NC.Moved just n. of Morganton.His grave is there.married Jemima Brown, b. Ireland.
Eight children, the second of which was Samuel Baxter Gibson, b. 15 Aug. 1794 in Burke Co., NC, d. 16 June 1878.Married in 1818 to Elizabeth "Eliza" Jane Black, d. fall of 1866. He was influential Baptist minister in Haywood Co. area.Their son was John Stewart Gibson;perhaps there were other children.
John Stewart Gibson, b. 1819 in Burke Co., NC, d. 1886 in Macon Co., NC, buried at Snow Hill Meth Cem, Macon Co.Married 29 aug 1839 to Martha "Mattie" Carroll, b. 20 Apr. 1824 in Haywood Co., d. 6 Feb 1866 in Swain Co, buried in Cochrane Cem in Alarka community, Swain Co.John was a captain in Mexican War.He was a school teacher.They had 15 children including 1 infant died.
Matilda Gibson, (called Aunt Sis) was b. 1844, d. 1894.She m. in 1866 to Rev. John Sadock Smiley, b. 11 nov. 1843 in Rutherford Co., NC.He was son of Jesse Madison Smiley and Annie Brendle Smiley.Matilda is buried in Dehart Cemetary.They had 12 children including 2 infants died.
John Stewart was my ggggrandfather.I am desceded from him through Thomas, the tenth of their children.
