St. Charles (Illinois) Chronicle, Sept. 4, 1924 News Gathered Here and There Robert Gibson, postmaster, and Hale Elston, former superintendent of schools of Effingham, were drowned in the Wabash river August 29, when they attempted to rescue Eugene Burk, 14, son of the Rev. J.E. Burk of Mason, Ill. They were attending a Methodist Sunday school picnic. When the boy made a dive and failed to come up, Elston dove after him. Gibson then dove and he, too, failed to return to the surface.
