No connect. between Jonathan GIBSON and the Bishop of London?
Greetings, Fellow Gibson Descendants:
A man named Jonathan Gibson (d. 1729) was sheriff of King George County, Virginia, and father, among others, of my ancestor Rachel Gibson. There is an old tradition that this Jonathan was either the brother of Edmund Gibson, a Bishop of London, or the son of the Bishop's brother, another Jonathan. (See Post # 4866, etc.) I first encountered this tradition in a family genealogy published in @ 1900.
My acceptance of this tradition hit a major snag for me this afternoon, when I read through:“Edmund Gibson Bishop of London 1669-1748: A Study in Politics & Religion in the Eighteenth Century,” by Norman Sykes, Oxford University Press, 1926. This book remains the definitive biography of the Bishop. I read through the copy at the New York Public Library.
In the biography there is no mention of any Jonathan Gibson; no indication of a relative moving to Virginia. The genealogical material in the biography shows the Bishop having one full brother, Thomas, who, according to the biography had only a single daughter. The daughter is not named.
The Bishop also had three half-brothers. The biography shows only one child among them, an unnamed son.
[Information from the Bishop’s family tree appears below.]
Now, I hasten to say my lack of findings of course does not definitively rule out some family connection between Jonathan and Edmund. The biography says very little about Bishop Gibson’s family; the biographer even notes this, saying that the Bishop left few records behind, evenregarding his own children. It is conceivable that our Jonathan was the child of one of Edmund’s full or half-brothers. But then again, he might not be.
Can anyone document Jonathan’s relationship to Edmund? Or can anyone cite where and how the tradition of their relationship arose?
