L. Lynn Holmes wrote in his book that when Louisville was the capital of Georgia, 1796-1807, that these preachers of all denominations came to the state house to preach: Phillips Gibbes Rector Thomas Rev. Stith Mead Rev. Mr. Hull of Augusta and Rev. M. L. Weems, rector of Mt. Vernon Parish Virginia in Virginia. "After reserving the building for their services, the ministers, hoping to have a sizeable audience, would advertise their meeting in the local newspaper." These preachers, other than Phillips Gibbes, were notable preachers of their time. I say "other than Phillips Gibbes", because I am at a loss on finding any information on him. Phillip's wife was Phebe. They left land to their daughter, Vashti. Their sons, Elhanan and Zacheus were witnesses on some of their land deeds. Their daughter, Achsah is mentioned. Their sons-in law, William Keener and Thomas Philpot are mentioned. After Phillip Gibbs died in 1804, Phebe and her children were in a scrape with the law in 1813 in Jasper Co., GA, involving a tavern owner named Ignatius Russel. Achsah Gibbs, their daughter, is a minor, and she and Phebe had to go to court. All children and Phebe were found innocent of charges of attacking the tavern owner and his wife with sticks and stones. Phebe bought land in Wilcox Co., GA in 1835. ANY help at all will be greatly appreciated. Louise Busby Gibbs Notify Administrator about this message?
