Some sources (such as Sumter Co. marriage records) indicate Mattie to be Mattie M. Scott, born 1855 & died 1938, in which case the relationship of Robert E. Harwood to Hawkins Gibbs in the 1910 census is odd. However, I know that Robert Harwood's mother was shown to be Mary S. Scott in the Greene Co. marriage records when she married Samuel Bernard Major Harwood and Mary Scott Gray in other records. Perhaps Mattie Gibbs was an aunt, rather than a sister. Mattie's birth date is all over the place (as is Hawkins) in the census records. In 1870, a Mattie Harwood (age 14), was shown living in Samuel B. M. Major's household. Will appreciate any help in figuring this out!
