The Chariton Leader, Chariton, Iowa
Saturday, May 8, 1880

The unusual monotony which has reigned in the city for the past few days, was broken in a startling manner on Thursday, by the report that THOMAS PROCTOR had been fatally stabbed by JOHN BARLOW. The particulars of the affair as far as we can learn them are as follows: For some time past JOHN BARLOW and his wife have been living apart, and not on the best of terms. He has accused MR. PROCTOR of being the cause of it, and of undue intimacy with the woman, which MR. PROCTOR has all the time emphatically denied. Accidentally they met in front of D.D. Waynick's dry goods store on Thursday, and it is supposed commenced talking upon the subject, but in so low a tone that persons standing within a few feet was unable to understand what was said. PROCTOR finally struck at BARLOW, who warded off the blow and returned it with a blow from his knife, the blade entering between the fourth and fifth ribs, narrowly missing the heart and cutting into the lower portion of the left lung. Sheriff Landes, who was standing on the Chariton House corner, ran up as soon as the trouble commenced and arrested BARLOW, who still had the knife in his hand. He was taken to jail and searched, a small 22 calibre revolver being found in his pocket. The knife used had a blade nearly four inches in length, and of the style usually carried in the pocket. PROCTOR, after the cutting, was immediately taken to Gibbon's drug store where his wound was dressed by Drs. Gibbon and Simmons. At first grave doubts were entertained as to his recovery, but on Friday morning his condition was much improved, and unless serious inflammation sets in, he will be around again in a short time.
