I came across the name of James Gibbens in the Allender Family book. I thought it might give you a clue of someplace to look...
In the 1860 census for St. Clair MO, the family of
James Gibbens, age 35, born VA, Miner, $200
Mary F age 25, born IN
Mary E., F age 14, born IN
Rachel, F age 8, born IN
Joseph L., M age 6, born IL
John W., M age 4, born IL
Ashue, M age 1, born MO
This family lived next to the family of Edward Allender and his step-brother Alex Robinson. Edward's son, James, married Frances Jane Gibbens. Her two older brothers had left home before she was born.
Perhaps Thomas wasn't originally from PA and possibly he had siblings that were adopted by the same family??? He could have been born in VA....
