George Washington says: "In my way to the mouth of the harbor, I stopped at a place called Kittery, in the Province of Maine, the river Piscataqua being the boundary between New Hampshire and it. From hence I went by the old Fort (formerly built while under the British government) off an island which is at the entrance of the harbour, and where the lighthouse stands. We were saluted by thirteen guns." FROM WASHINGTON’S PRIVATE DIARY, 1789., as quoted by Charles W Brewster in "Rambles About Portsmouth"; 1859; pp 253 - from CD scanned by Toni Feeney Note from Marci Young Delaney: the island referred to is Gerrish Island.
