Hi Lowell,
Like most family names GERRIE has many spelling variations, particularly as one goes back into the 18th and 19th centuries.
In my own family line we have the following versions:-
George HEREGARE (1686)
James HERRYGERRY (1714)
David HERRYGERRY (1737)
George HARRYGERRY (1761)
Forbes GERREY (1790)
Alexander GERRIE (1831)
Alexander GERRIE (1860)
Mary GERRIE (1886)
The first seven of these were all born in one small part of Aberdeenshire in Scotland and Mary was my paternal grandmother. As I was her first born grandchild my given name was her maiden surname. An old Scots custom.
When I first went to school my name was assumed to be GERRY and I wrote it that way until I was about eight and got put right by someone in the family.
Regards, Gerrie BROWN
