Hi Kay,
I was glad to get your message about the Guerard family from SC.I would love to see a copy of the family tree that was prepared in 1901.As far as the DNA test goes, I have learned that it is necessary to test at least 50+ markers in order to determine a relatively close match. It has to be done by a direct male descendent through all males. My brother had the test done on only 20 markers, it cost about $120 and, although he matched 8 people, they are not likely to be related. At least not within the last 15-20 generations. So we'll have to decide if we want to spend some more $$ to test further. What I did learn is that our haplogroup, R1b, can be traced to France. It is also the same group as most western Europeans, so it's certainly not going to point to much. I can't help but think that there might be some connection between the Guerard family who settled in SC, the Giraud family who settled in NY and my Gerrow family, supposedly descended from French Hugenots, who settled in Northern Ireland. If nothing else, most of us had our name anglicized to GERROW/GEROW/JERROW at some point.Well, I'll let you know if I discover anything that would lead me to a connection to SC.Historically, I would love to see the family tree you have.I lived for a number of years in Charleston, SC and love the history there. You can contact me at my regular e-mail address, [email protected] .
