My husbands Great-grandparents- Herrgesell-(Anton Herrgesell and wife Franziska (Kretschmer))came from a town on the Austrian /Prussia border-which ran right thru the center of their home and Grist mill. We believe it was Engelsberg but have been told that it was detroyed and another town built over it.The new name was two parts also and I am thinking it had Holstein as second part.
The war between Austria/ Prussia raged in 1866.The family decided to leave for America.
The names that I am looking for are: Theresia Pietsch m. Franz (or Frank) Kretschmer and they had 4 or 5 daughters--Wenzel (who died in Prussia(?)) , Franziska, Antonia Amelia, Hermine, and Frances.
Anton left Austria/Prussia with wife and 4 daughters thru the Port of Bremen, Germany and came to USA on ship named the Hansa. landed in Castle Garden NY in 1868. Went to Michigan and settled in Mason Co. Milwaukee and Ludington. Johanna married Bendix Petersen Landt from Flensburg,Schleswig-Holstein.
I am now thinking that the Pietsch, Kretschmer and Herrgesell families all lived in or near this town. I have no map so cannot be sure. Do you have any info on this non-existant town of Engelsberg?
