Birth of Wilhelm Gotfrit Schauer at Rackwitz, Saxony around 1824

Dear Saxony GenForum,

I am trying to locate the German christening/birth record for a relative named Wilhelm Gotfrit Schauer (William Godfrey Schauer).

From his Australian naturalisation, marriage and death records I believe that he may have been born around 1824 (give or take a few years) in Rackwitz, Saxony which is about 15 km north of Leipzig. His naturalisation paperwork gave his place of birth as Rackwitz, Kingdom of Prussia. His parents were Gotfrit Schauer, a farmer, and Elizabeth Klots (the spellings may not be correct).

Wilhelm arrived in Australia in 1859 onboard the Solon which is belived to have departed Bremen in December 1858. He worked as a cooper.

In Australia he married a German girl from the Rhineland who was Catholic but they were married in the Church of England, ie protestant. Therefore I suspect that Wilhelm may have been protestant.

Are there likely to be any church (or civil) records in Leipzig which could be used to trace his birth/christening?

Much appreciate any advice.

Best regards,
CM
